Batik Workshop – Patterns in Nature
Saturday 27th September, 10am – 3pm
Discover the vibrant and expressive art of batik in this hands-on workshop, ideal for complete beginners or anyone looking to revisit this creative technique.
Led by local artist Lynn Toulson, this five-hour session (including a one-hour lunch break) offers a comprehensive introduction to batik – from initial design to your finished piece.
You’ll begin by learning the basics of this wax-resist method using tjantings, brushes, and stamps, first practising on paper with water-based colours before moving on to cotton fabric and professional fabric dyes.
Participants will explore patterns inspired by nature, choosing from a selection of designs or bringing their own ideas. You’ll trace your design onto cotton, stretch it over a frame, and build up layers of colour and texture using wax and dye. If time allows, extra fabric will be available for a second design.
At the end of the day, your wax will be removed and you’ll leave with your own unique batik artwork.
- All materials provided.
- Latex gloves will be available.
- Please bring an apron or wear old clothes – we’ll be working with dyes.
- This workshop is for adults aged 18 and over, as it involves the use of hot wax.
Lunch
A table will be reserved in The Horton Café, where you’re welcome to pre-order lunch.
